Case study

SSE Penner Road

LSSE are a leading UK energy provider, and the only company listed on the London Stock Exchange involved in producing, distributing and supplying electricity and gas, along with other energy related services. With a call centre work force of over 1500 people at the Penner Road site in Havant, keeping the site wide BMS system operational during the chiller plant replacement project was critical.

Working directly for SSE’s Property Services team, Intech Controls were employed to design, supply and install the new MCP panels required to control and manage the new Airedale chiller plant. Responsible for providing call centre services for SSE’s nationwide business operations, the site had to remain fully operational during the works. To achieve this Intech Control supplied and installed a temporary control panel to manage the critical valves and pump sets, which was tested for a period of one week to ensure stability, before the MCP upgrade could formally commence.

The new chiller control solution was delivered by Intech using the latest Trend IQ4E main plant controller platform, along with the required field wiring to the new valves, sensors, flow switches and flow meters, the latter being used to calculate the buildings’ cooling demand so that the newly designed control software can sequence the 4 chillers in the most efficient configuration, based on the load and outside air temperature. Designed in this way, the system is capable of automatically choosing the most appropriate chiller, with certain configurations capable of achieving ‘free-cooling’ for the CHW services by running one or both air-cooled compressor chillers, drastically reducing the energy consumption of the system overall.

Intech also supplied high level interfaces to integrate seamlessly with the onboard Modbus and BACnet communication protocols being used by the new chiller systems, therefore enabling richer data transmission with the BMS system. Via the upgraded graphics on the 963 supervisor application, detailed running parameters, fault conditions and other relevant system information is provided in real-time to the building managers and also allows Intech to provide advanced remote support and energy analytic services to the client.

Since Intech Controls have been engaged to Service/Maintain and Optimise a number of our Building Management Systems we have been impressed with the overall results obtained, both in terms of the energy savings obtained with the building conditions being maintained and more stable, this was helped by the logical strategy of control which has been implemented.

The knowledge of the staff makes all the difference with BMS work, and the can do attitude demonstrated by the Intech Staff makes them a pleasure to work with, and if it’s possible they are happy to do it.

The Call out service gives peace of mind, and on the very few occasions we have called it into action, we have received quick effective response and resolution  to the issue.

I would have no hesitation to recommend Intech Controls  for your building management systems based on the service we have received.
